Invisibility cloak one step closer, scientists say

I jst saw this on web.

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists have created two new types of materials that can bend light the wrong way, creating the first step toward an invisibility cloaking device.

One approach uses a type of fishnet of metal layers to reverse the direction of light, while another uses tiny silver wires, both at the nanoscale level.

Both are so-called metamaterials -- artificially engineered structures that have properties not seen in nature, such as negative refractive index.

The two teams were working separately under the direction of Xiang Zhang of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center at the University of California, Berkeley with U.S. government funding. One team reported its findings in the journal Science and the other in the journal Nature.

Each new material works to reverse light in limited wavelengths, so no one will be using them to hide buildings from satellites, said Jason Valentine, who worked on one of the projects.

"We are not actually cloaking anything," Valentine said in a telephone interview. "I don't think we have to worry about invisible people walking around any time soon. To be honest, we are just at the beginning of doing anything like that."

Valentine's team made a material that affects light near the visible spectrum, in a region used in fiber optics.

"In naturally occurring material, the index of refraction, a measure of how light bends in a medium, is positive," he said.

Applications of superconductors

Superconducting magnets are some of the most powerful electromagnets known. They are used in MRI and NMR machines and the beam-steering magnets used in particle accelerators. They can also be used for magnetic separation, where weakly magnetic particles are extracted from a background of less or non-magnetic particles, as in the pigment industries.

Superconductors have also been used to make digital circuits (e.g. based on the Rapid Single Flux Quantum technology) and RF and microwave filters for mobile phone base stations.

Superconductors are used to build Josephson junctions which are the building blocks of SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference devices), the most sensitive magnetometers known. Series of Josephson devices are used to define the SI volt. Depending on the particular mode of operation, a Josephson junction can be used as photon detector or as mixer. The large resistance change at the transition from the normal- to the superconducting state is used to build thermometers in cryogenic micro-calorimeter photon detectors.

Other early markets are arising where the relative efficiency, size and weight advantages of devices based on HTS outweigh the additional costs involved.

Promising future applications include high-performance transformers, power storage devices, electric power transmission, electric motors (e.g. for vehicle propulsion, as in vactrains or maglev trains), magnetic levitation devices, and Fault Current Limiters. However superconductivity is sensitive to moving magnetic fields so applications that use alternating current (e.g. transformers) will be more difficult to develop than those that rely upon direct current.

Graduation is a time

Graduation is a time
For feeling very proud,
For thinking lots of lovely thoughts
And saying them out loud.

It's a time for feeling love
About to overflow,
And just before it leaps its banks,
To let the loved one know.

And so I'm very proud of you
For being who you are,
For making something of yourself,
For making it this far.

I'm proud because I am a part
Of everything you do.
This time's the time to say how much
In love I am with you.

If there is anyone in life you love this much???

A girl and guy were speeding over 100 mph on the road on a motorcycle...
Girl: Slow down. Im scared.
Guy: No this is fun.
Girl: No its not. Please, its too scary!
Guy: Then tell me you love me.
Girl: Fine, I love you. Slow down!
Guy: Now give me a BIG hug.
Girl hugs him
Guy: Can you take my helmet off & put it on yourself ? Its bugging me.

In the paper the next day :( A motorcycle had crashed into a building because of brake failure.
Two people were on it, but only one had survived.
The truth was that halfway down the road, the guy realized that his brakes broke, but he didn't want to let the girl know.
Instead, he had her say she loved him & felt her hug him one last time, then had her wear his helmet so that she would live even though it meant that he would die.

Annoying public speaking habits

Here are some annoying public speaking habits. They can be deal breakers, so avoid these annoying habits at all costs!

  • Voice Trailing Off - Many speakers let their voices trail off at the end of every sentence. The audience can hear the first part of their sentence, but they have no idea what pearls of wisdom might be lost in the whispers at the end.

  • Looking Down - Sometimes this speaker will deliver complete sentences inaudibly while looking down — obviously not interested at that moment in engaging the audience.

  • Mumbling - Mumbling is not cool. Inexperienced speakers will often speak at conversation level, not giving any thought or consideration to the people in the back of the room. Recently, I sat in on a panel discussion at a workshop. The panelists chose to sit instead of stand to address the standing-room-only crowd, which I thought was rude. And one man, whenever it was his turn to speak, would rest his elbows on the table and fold his hands in front of his mouth during the entire time that he was speaking.

  • Reading - Some speakers are not good readers. If you are not skilled at reading something out loud, don’t do it while speaking. Especially avoid doing this secretly. In other words, if you plan to deliver your speech by reading all or part of it, and you do not have good out loud reading skills, forget it.

  • Not keeping everyone involved - Inexperienced or thoughtless speakers leave members of the audience out. When an audience member asks a question, it is rarely heard in the back of the room. I’ve seen many expert speakers respond to the question by engaging in a one-on-one conversation with this person while the rest of the audience is left wondering. Speakers, I urge you to repeat the question so everyone is on the same page. And then respond to the question so that everyone in the room can hear it.

  • Sitting Down - Some speakers choose to sit down on the job. In a very small, intimate group or when the audience is sitting in a circle of chairs or on the floor, for example, speaking while seated is generally okay. But if you have a room containing six rows of chairs or more, you really should express respect for those in the back of the room by standing so that you can be seen as well as heard.

  • Filler Words - Even some professional speakers still use too many filler words. It takes practice, but you can rid your vocabulary (especially while speaking in public) of those filler words like, uh, ah, er. Also avoid connecting sentences by overusing “and.”

  • Overshooting Time Allotment - Many speakers have trouble staying within the time allotment. Most programs or presentations are carefully organized. Each segment is designed to fit into a specific time slot. I’ve seen speakers completely disregard their time constraints and foul up the entire evening’s program. Not cool.

My design - Improvement to the traditional cane tea collector

This is a design I and 3 of my friends suggest for improvement of the traditional cane tea collector.

Question
The traditional cane tea collector basket used in the tea industry is becoming increasingly unpopular among the new generation of state workers. There is a need for an improved basket that will overcome the disadvantages of the traditional basket. What are the factors you have to consider in developing a new design solution for collecting fresh tea leaves plucked by the state workers?

Main factors which should be considered

 Preserve the freshness of the leaves
 Comfortability of the collector
 Higher capacity, to collect more tea leaves at a time
 Easy and compact in transportation and storage of the baskets

Disadvantages/weaknesses of the traditional cane tea collector

 The basket is heavy, because it is made out of cane
 Because of the round shape, the basket can rotate around it when it is hanged on the back/around the head
 Low life time
 Incomfortability to the collector (can cause pains in back and/or neck)
 Difficulty in storing the baskets because the baskets are handmade and can be in various sizes

Solutions we decided

 New basket will be made by nylon strings (with spaces on the wall)
 Air can circulate through the spaces on the wall, so that the leaves will not braise
 That will reduce the weight of the basket
 Nylon has more life time than cane
 The new design can be stored in a small space, because it can be folded

 The shape of the basket is changed to a shape which will not waggle around the user
 The round shape is changed in to a shape where wore surface will touch the user’s back

 The shape of the basket changed to comfort the user
 That will reduce the pains the user will face

Remember....

NEVER CRY FOR ANY RELATION IN LIFE
BECAUSE FOR THE ONE WHOM YOU CRY
DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR TEARS
AND THE ONE WHO DESERVES
WILL NEVER LET YOU CRY.................

TREAT EVERYONE WITH POLITENESS
EVEN THOSE WHO ARE RUDE TO YOU,
NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT NICE
BUT BECAUSE YOU ARE NICE.......................

NEVER SEARCH YOUR HAPPINESS
IN OTHERS
WHICH WILL MAKE YOU
FEEL ALONE,
RATHER SEARCH IT IN YOURSELF
YOU WILL FEEL HAPPY
EVEN IF YOU ARE LEFT ALONE......................

ALWAYS HAVE
A POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN LIFE.
THERE IS SOMETHING POSITIVE
IN EVERY PERSON.
EVEN A STOPPED WATCH IS RIGHT
TWICE A DAY....................................

HAPPINESS ALWAYS LOOKS SMALL
WHEN WE HOLD IT IN OUR HANDS.
BUT WHEN WE LEARN TO
SHARE IT,
WE REALIZE HOW BIG AND PRECIOUS IT IS!.................

Life is Short

A fish is crying

Does Love Need a Reason

Some people never understand
Once a lady when having a conversation with her lover, asked:

Lady :
Why do you like me..? Why do you love me?

Man : I can t tell the reason.. but I really like you..
Lady :
You can t even tell me the reason... how can you say you like me? How can you say you love me?
Man :
I really don t know the reason, but I can prove that I love U.
Lady :
Proof? No! I want you to tell me the reason. My friend s boyfriend can tell her why he loves her but not you!
Man :
Ok..ok!!! Erm... because you are beautiful,

because your voice is sweet,
because you are caring,

because you are loving,

because you are thoughtful,

because of your smile,

because of your every movements.

The lady felt very satisfied with the man s answer.
Unfortunately, a few days later, the Lady met with an accident and went in comma.
The Guy then placed a letter by her side,

Darling,Because of your sweet voice that I love you...Now can you talk? No! Therefore I cannot love you.
Because of your care and concern that I like you..Now that you cannot show them, therefore I cannot love you.

Because of your smile, because of your every movements that I love you..

Now can you smile? Now can you move? No, therefore I cannot love you...

If love needs a reason, like now,There is no reason for me to love you anymore.

Does love need a reason?

NO!Therefore,
I still LOVE YOU...

True love never dies for it is lust that fades away. Love bonds for a lifetime but lust just pushes away"

Immature love says: 'I love you because I need you.' Mature love says 'I need you because I love you.'
